The Brand Messaging Process Consultants Need for Clarity and Confidence

brand messaging & positioning Nov 19, 2025

If you are a consultant or coach who feels like your messaging has not caught up with who you are now or where you want to go next, you are in the right place.

In this post, I am taking you inside my full brand positioning and messaging process. This is the exact process every client goes through before we build offers, websites, copy, or a marketing plan.

This work is the foundation for a business that reflects your identity, purpose, strengths, lived experience, and long term goals.

Why Brand Messaging Matters for Consultants and Coaches

Brand messaging is not just about the words on your website. It is about clarity, confidence, and alignment. If your messaging feels fuzzy or outdated, it is usually a sign that something in your career or business has shifted. For consultants and coaches, this work is very personal because we are building personal brands that reflect who we are and the impact we want to make.

I treat messaging as a transformational process, not a copywriting project.

Step 1: Establishing the Partnership

The first step in my process is creating what I call the partnership setup. I discovered how important this step was when a client told me her own clients were not following through. That conversation helped me see that we always start with alignment. We clarify goals, expectations, fears that might show up, and how we will work together.

Messaging work is vulnerable work. When we normalize fears like visibility fears, money fears, and imposter syndrome, it becomes easier to move forward with confidence.

Step 2: Listen to Your Life Instead of the Market

Before we talk about messaging, we look inward. I walk each client through four life inventories that reveal the patterns, strengths, and lived experiences that shape their brand.

Your Expertise Inventory

We uncover both formal and informal expertise. Many clients discover hidden strengths or new directions they had not considered because their expertise has evolved.

Your Strengths Inventory

Strengths are not skills on your resume. They are the natural gifts you almost dismiss. I help clients identify what they are truly best at, which becomes a major part of their unique value.

Your Stance Inventory

Your stance is the belief system that sits underneath how you help clients get results. It often comes from personal experiences such as burnout, reinvention, or major transitions.

Your Market Feedback Inventory

We look at how others already describe the value they receive from you. This includes testimonials, reviews, surveys, or simple feedback. These insights often reveal themes you cannot see from the inside.

This phase is where clarity begins to surface.

Step 3: Create Your Ideal Client Archetype

Before you can craft messaging, you must know who the messaging is for. Your ideal client is the person you would love to help, the person who would love working with you, and the person who has a problem that sparks you to compassion and action.

This step can feel challenging because it forces you to choose. Yet when you land on the right ideal client, momentum begins. Everything becomes easier. Conversations become clearer. Opportunities become more aligned.

Step 4: Clarify What You Do and the Value Clients Receive

Once you know who you serve, you can finally articulate what you do in a compelling and relevant way. Your value is not your job title. It is the difference clients experience because they worked with you.

Clients want to know how you help them move faster, avoid false starts, reduce stress, and achieve their goals with more confidence. When we place your expertise in the context of your ideal client, the value becomes obvious.

Step 5: Craft the Messaging

Now we turn your brand position into messaging. I teach clients to communicate through story. Your client is the hero. You are the guide. Messaging can shift based on the audience or the moment, but the strategy stays consistent.

Clear messaging helps people instantly understand who you serve, what you do, and why it matters. It also helps others refer the right people to you because they can finally see what you do with clarity.

Why This Process Works

The power of this process does not come from a set of clever questions. It comes from the depth of reflection, the patterns we uncover together, and the way I mirror back what you may not be able to see in yourself. Clients walk away with clarity that they have often been chasing for years.

They gain confidence, purpose, alignment, and the foundation for a business they truly love.
