5 Steps to Position Your Coaching or Consulting for Bigger Impact
Jun 18, 2025If you're a consultant or coach who's ready for bigger impact, better clients, and more strategic work, you’re in the right place. Because let’s be honest, referrals, great credentials, or even decades of experience aren’t enough to take you where you want to go.
In this post, I’m breaking down the five essential steps to position your business strategically, so you can attract ideal clients, command premium fees, and build a brand that reflects the transformational results you deliver.
What Strategic Positioning Really Means
Strategic positioning isn’t about flashy branding or clever taglines. It’s about intentionally shaping how your expertise is perceived and used, so you're landing the right work, with the right clients, at the right level.
It’s the difference between being seen as a hired hand versus a trusted advisor. And in 2025’s uncertain market, that difference will define your success.
Step 1: Listen to Your Life to Find Your Unique Market Fit
Before you design offers or marketing campaigns, you have to understand what your life has been preparing you to do all along.
This step is what I call “Listening to Your Life," mining your personal and professional story to find:
-
Your superpowers and strengths
-
The themes in your career people repeatedly come to you for
-
What problems you're uniquely wired and motivated to solve
This insight helps you build a business that’s aligned from the start. You’ll also gain powerful language you can use to articulate your value and speak directly to what your clients need, because you’ve lived it.
Step 2: Clarify Your Brand Positioning and Messaging
Once you know your unique value, it’s time to define your brand position:
-
Who you help
-
The strategic problems you solve
-
The transformation your clients experience
Then, and only then, can you develop messaging that resonates.
Most consultants and coaches skip to tactics without this clarity. But when your positioning is vague, your marketing will fall flat. When it’s crystal clear, your network starts sending you ideal referrals, and strangers reading your site think, “Where have you been?!”
Step 3: Frame, Price, and Pitch Your Offers Strategically
If you're charging by the hour or leading with your methodology, it's time to pivot.
Your next-level clients aren’t buying time; they’re buying outcomes. That’s why your offers should be solution-based, with pricing that reflects the ROI you help your clients create.
Here’s what strategic offers do:
-
Position you as a partner, not a vendor
-
Make your value obvious and tangible
-
Allow you to confidently raise your rates
Even in uncertain economies, this positioning allows you to adapt fast. You’re not a commodity; they can’t Google what you do.
Step 4: Build a Credible Website That Converts
Your website isn’t a business card or an online resume, it’s your most valuable business development asset.
When done right, it:
-
Reflects your brand positioning with confidence
-
Converts visitors into leads with compelling calls to action
-
Establishes your authority before you even get on a call
Yes, even referral clients will check your site. And yes, a weak website can lose you a six-figure contract. I’ve seen it happen.
In 2025, focus your website on clarity, relevance, and results. Use SEO keywords that align with your niche and include targeted landing pages for each offer.
Step 5: Build a Marketing System You Actually Enjoy
Hate marketing? You’re not alone. But inconsistent visibility leads to inconsistent revenue.
The good news? You don’t have to do it all.
Choose marketing channels that fit your strengths:
-
If you’re a writer: Start a blog or email newsletter
-
If you’re a speaker: Host a podcast or post short-form video
-
If you’re a connector: Leverage strategic relationships on LinkedIn
And make sure your content is relevant for today. Instead of generic posts, tailor your message to your audience in 2025. Speak to their pain points now, not what worked five years ago.
