I’ll never forget the moment back in 2013 when I discovered this truth.

I was dealing with what felt like one major challenge with another. Work challenges, kid challenges, relationship challenges, fire in my house challenges, health scare crisis challenges…nonstop. Before becoming a single mom, I thought two parents working with kids was stressful. At this point, I started longing for the good ole days of ease!

To handle the stress – I was encouraged to try meditation. Which made no sense to me…at all. I was encouraged to look at my racing and overabundant thoughts and consider them like waves on the ocean or scenes of a movie. And as I sat in my mediation chair, set my timer, and tried to put myself at the beach to watch my ocean wave thoughts – I would start picking out my clothes in my head for my next business trip before getting so annoyed that I gave up.

And then I went on a business trip to San Francisco to facilitate customer focus groups for one of my clients. I brought all of my meditation audios and books along because gosh darn it – I was going to figure this out!  After another frustrating attempt at meditation, I found myself in a boardroom, leading my focus groups of customers.

When you lead a focus group, you have questions that you ask but your real goal is to simply deeply listen to what each person has to say and find the themes. You don’t let one person’s ideas dominate the group. You look for the through-line between what everyone has to say. But if one person gets animated – the last thing you do is ignore them. You leverage your trusted flip chart that is set up for this very situation and you listen more deeply to them. You use what I call the “write it on the flip chart” technique which is if someone is extremely disruptive – you write down what they say and mirror back to them what you heard so that they know you got them and usually they will settle down.

So, as I did this listening process with my client over and over again and the light bulb went off! THIS was what everyone was talking about when it comes to meditation! It wasn’t about ignoring my thoughts. It was the opposite. I was connecting to the different parts of me and whatever they had to say without judgment or even a solution.

The seed was planted in me that there was something to my organization development and my work with organizations that could help me better master my internal world and thus my Internal Boardroom™ coaching process was born.
